We are invited today to graze the Joint Anniversary Celebration of the Philippine Marines in Sulu. We enjoy the gathering. There are lots of food and there are lots of wonderful people in attendance.

There, one can notice immediately that Marines are human, too. They are not Dragons, Hydra, or Chimera as earlier described to us by our folks at home. Marines smile, laugh, and cry too like everyone of us.

I am now hoping to know more about them. They are also for peace, similar to the advocacy of our forefathers -- everyone are for peace.

Last night, while we were promenading at the Jolo Wharf with my family, the United Sulu Chess Club  martials happened to see us, and walked over towards us.

Hulma (not her real name), 13 years old, is your ordinary kid living next door. Sociable, obedient, playful, Hulma easily gets along with every person in the neighborhood.

One day, that's yesterday morning, she told her parents that she'll gonna go to the Sulu High School to enroll as freshman there. Her mother handed her P20 as her pocketmoney.

Later that day, her friends called home that Hulma was shouting loudly at school and making a great show. Her parents picked her up on a motorized tricycle home.

The whole afternoon, she was shouting loudly: "Bukun aku hi Hulma! Bukun aku hi Hulma!" (I am not Hulma! I am not Hulma!)

Who do not want a place where people of different religious beliefs can learn to live in peace, harmony and mutual good will. Will that ever be possible in Sulu, or in the Philippines as a whole, for that matter? 

An FB friend, Nelson Tapsirul, said: “Singapore is characterized by diversity of religious beliefs and practices due to mix of peoples originating from various countries. But they live in peace and harmony. We may need to learn from Singapore experience.”

Sounds easy right? But extremely hard to do. Why? Because, our training from the Spanish conquistadores had been totally awesome and complete!

There are always good and bad sides to all things -- the Yin and Yang. Or else, the world is incomplete.

The innate and pristine beauty of Sulu in the southern Philippines has been largely protected because of the negative publicity that Sulu exhibits to the outside world. Rich land developers and investors would not come for fear that their investments would suffer in Sulu.

But keeping Sulu as "peaceful but volatile" as it is will keep us backward and stagnant for a long time. We can not compete with the world's fast evolving modernity. The Arab words are already competing against each other for prosperity. The Tausug are mostly Muslims, too.
